What is sustainability?

Sustainability plays an essential role in the successful future of our Environment, Society and Economy.

It means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

Technically this means reaching our goals without destroying the future.

As well as natural resources, we also need social and economic resources for our future.

Embedded in most definitions of sustainability we also find concerns for social equity and economic development.

Why you should be sustainable.

To live a sustainable future we all need to take action:

  • Some of the worst impacts of climate change could be irreversible by 2030. Meaning if we don't take action now we will ruin this planet for future generations to come.

  • There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now than at any point in the past 800,000 years.

  • Being sustainable can preserve the environment, improve health, reduce hazardous waste, increase safety and save money.

  • All living things benefit from cleaner and healthier products.

  • Sustainability is important for many reasons including environmental quality – In order to have healthy communities, we need clean air, natural resources, and a nontoxic environment.

  • Sustainability and healthcare are related since the quality of our environment affects us as living beings.

  • Global warming is an example of what happens when we do not develop sustainably.
